Trump Says US Control of Greenland Is Crucial to Golden Dome Missile Defence Plan

President Donald Trump on Wednesday insisted that American control of Greenland was “vital” to the success of his proposed Golden Dome air and missile defence project, reinforcing his long-standing interest in the strategically located Arctic territory.

“The United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security. It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building,” Trump wrote on social media, reiterating earlier remarks in which he openly expressed willingness to seize the island from Denmark, a long-time US ally.

He further argued that America’s dominance over Greenland would significantly strengthen the Western military alliance, declaring, “NATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the UNITED STATES. Anything less than that is unacceptable.”

Trump’s comments were posted just hours before senior Danish and Greenlandic officials were scheduled to arrive at the White House for high-level discussions on Greenland with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, underscoring the heightened diplomatic tension surrounding the issue.

Ahead of the meeting, Denmark’s Defence Minister, Troels Lund Poulsen, attempted to calm Washington’s security concerns. Speaking to AFP, Poulsen said Denmark was already increasing its military footprint in Greenland and was actively consulting allies on “an increased NATO presence in the Arctic.”

Despite those assurances, Trump maintained that NATO itself should take the lead in developing the ambitious, multi-layer missile defence initiative tied to the Golden Dome project. He warned that failure to act decisively could leave room for rival powers to gain the upper hand.

“IF WE DON’T, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL, AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!” Trump wrote, framing the issue as a critical contest for global military dominance.

The US president has repeatedly voiced intentions to take control of the vast, resource-rich and sparsely populated Arctic island, citing its strategic importance.

His rhetoric has grown increasingly forceful in recent weeks, particularly after he ordered a deadly January 3 operation in Venezuela that resulted in the removal of that country’s president, an action that appeared to embolden his foreign policy posture.

What you should know

Greenland has long been viewed as a strategic asset due to its location between North America and Europe, making it crucial for missile detection, Arctic security and military logistics.

Trump’s Golden Dome project is designed as a layered air and missile defence system aimed at countering advanced threats from rival powers such as Russia and China. While Greenland remains an autonomous territory under Denmark, US interest in the island has intensified amid rising global tensions and increased competition in the Arctic.

Denmark has consistently rejected any notion of ceding control, instead offering closer defence cooperation within NATO.
