Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has expressed strong confidence about securing a second term in office, declaring that the 2027 general election would be easier for him compared to previous contests.

The governor spoke at the 2025 Aro Day celebration held in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State, where he said he harbours no fear about the next election cycle, stressing that the performance of his administration since assuming office would work in his favour.

Otti explained that unlike the 2023 election, when he relied largely on promises, his administration now has visible achievements to showcase to the people of Abia State.

“Just like it happened in 2023, 2027 will even be smoother, I can assure you. Why am I so confident? I’m confident because in 2023, we were selling promises, but now there are one or two things we can point to,” he said.

The governor also noted that political tension surrounding the 2027 elections was unnecessary, as the polls were still some distance away.

“2027 is still far away, but a lot of people have started killing themselves before 2027 comes.

“We are not worried about 2027 because we have a mandate to deliver to our people in four years. We’ve done 30 months, so we still have a long way to go,” Otti stated.

Also speaking at the event, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, praised the Abia governor for what he described as remarkable progress under his leadership, noting that the impact of Otti’s governance has drawn attention beyond the state and the country.

“I like to congratulate Dr. Otti for all the work he has done in Abia. I’m sure for those of you in Abia, nobody needs to tell you. But you will want to know that even outside Abia and outside Nigeria, everyone has taken note of the great transformation of the last two years.

“I will like to congratulate Governor Otti for his work and to pray that he will continue to deliver for the people. And I’m proud to be a member of his international economic advisory Board (Council),” he said.

What you should know

Alex Otti, a former banker, won the Abia governorship election in 2023 on the platform of the Labour Party, ending years of dominance by the Peoples Democratic Party in the state.

Since assuming office, his administration has focused on infrastructure renewal, civil service reforms and fiscal discipline.

His confidence about 2027 reflects growing political calculations as governors across the country begin to position themselves ahead of the next general election, even as debates continue about performance, governance delivery and voter expectations.
