President Bola Tinubu has reiterated Nigeria’s ambition to lead artificial intelligence (AI) innovation in Africa, revealing a new collaboration with Google. Tinubu, in a statement on his verified X handle, shared details of his meeting with Google CEO Sundar Pichai in France, where discussions focused on advancing AI and digital transformation.
He highlighted that the partnership will concentrate on five key areas: expanding scalable cloud infrastructure, equipping Nigeria’s workforce with future-ready skills, fostering AI research and innovation, encouraging cloud adoption, and solidifying Nigeria’s reputation as a global technology hub. According to Tinubu, this initiative aligns with his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes economic diversification through industrialization, digitization, and innovation.
The president also mentioned Nigeria’s existing prospects in the AI sector, particularly Awarri Technologies, a company the federal government is collaborating with to develop essential AI software infrastructure tailored to Nigeria’s market needs.
To ensure the project’s success, Tinubu stated that the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy will provide strategic oversight, while the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) will take charge of implementation. He emphasized that the partnership with Google will create new economic opportunities, empower businesses, and position Nigeria as a leading force in the global digital economy.
