President Bola Tinubu has renewed his administration’s assurance to confront the growing wave of banditry, kidnappings, and terrorism across the northern part of the country, stressing that every region will receive equal attention as the government strengthens nationwide vigilance.

Speaking at the 25th Anniversary celebration of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) in Kaduna on Saturday, the President, represented by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajuddeen Abbas, acknowledged that the North is grappling with some of the most severe security and social challenges in its history. He noted that issues such as widespread insecurity, the breakdown of communal values, and the erosion of moral guidance have weakened communities that were once tightly knit and deeply principled.

Tinubu admitted that the security complications inherited by his administration were complex and deeply layered, but maintained that he remains firmly resolved and deeply committed to restoring safety and stability across the region. He vowed that his government would not relent until peace is fully regained.

The President also expressed optimism that the long-standing economic stagnation in the North would soon give way to progress, pointing to the anticipated production of crude oil from the Kolmani fields and other developing oil exploration opportunities within the region. He emphasised that the country as a whole cannot thrive when a major part of its foundation is “paralysed,” stressing that Northern stability is vital to Nigeria’s unity, prosperity, and overall future.

Highlighting his administration’s ongoing interventions in the region, Tinubu mentioned enhanced investments in transportation infrastructure—including road, rail, and inland waterways. Among the major projects he listed was the Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano Superhighway, which he said would be delivered and inaugurated in Kano in the coming months.

Although attending the ACF anniversary as a symbolic son of the Nigerian federation, Tinubu emphasised that his duty extends to every region and every citizen. He reminded leaders that true leadership demands sacrifice and moral accountability, warning that authority means little without responsibility to the people.

The President stressed that the North has not failed but could falter if leaders abandon their responsibility to uplift one another. He cautioned that decline begins the moment leaders sleep peacefully while millions endure hunger, fear, and hardship—even on brief journeys within their communities.

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon—represented by former Vice President Namadi Sambo—also addressed the gathering, describing unity, peace, and harmony as the essential “oxygen” that sustains national development and preserves collective dignity. He recalled that the ACF was founded on the principles of moderation and national cohesion, noting that these ideals must become actionable commitments rather than mere expressions.

Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, represented by his Deputy, Hadiza Balarabe, reaffirmed the state’s dedication to pursuing peace-building, inclusivity, and rural development as indispensable pillars of long-term growth. He explained that the current administration has adopted a leadership approach rooted in reconciliation, transparency, and citizen engagement—an approach that is gradually rebuilding trust in communities once divided by longstanding conflicts.

Governor Sani described Kaduna as the symbolic “historic centre of Northern identity,” adding that hosting the ACF headquarters is both an honour and an obligation to contribute meaningfully to the region’s future direction.

What You Should Know

President Bola Tinubu used the ACF anniversary to reassure northern leaders that his administration is prioritising security and regional stability.

He highlighted major infrastructure projects and emerging oil prospects as signs of economic revival.

The message from all speakers—including former leaders and the Kaduna government—emphasized unity, responsible leadership, and shared commitment to restoring peace across the North.
