The Senate on Wednesday approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to dismiss the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners of Abia, Adamawa, and Sokoto States. The decision followed the adoption of a motion moved by Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele.

The suspended RECs are Ike Uzochukwu (Abia), Hudu Yunusa-Ari (Adamawa), and Nura Ali (Sokoto). President Tinubu had previously sought the Senate’s approval to remove them over allegations of gross misconduct.

While presenting the motion, Bamidele stated that the president’s request aligns with Section 157(1) of the constitution. Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro supported the motion, arguing that the dismissal of the commissioners would serve as a warning to public officeholders. He emphasized the administration’s commitment to fighting corruption, stating that such actions would deter misconduct in public service.

Chief Whip of the Senate, Tahir Monguno, also backed the motion, noting that with 91 senators present at the plenary, the chamber had the required two-thirds majority to approve the president’s request. He described the motion as a means to uphold the integrity of public offices in accordance with constitutional provisions.

Following a voice vote, Senate President Godswill Akpabio adopted the motion, officially granting approval for the termination of the suspended commissioners.
