Estonia has accused Russia of violating its airspace after three MiG-31 fighter jets reportedly crossed into the country over the Gulf of Finland on Friday, remaining for 12 minutes before leaving.
The incident, confirmed by Estonia’s defence ministry, comes amid heightened tensions on NATO’s eastern flank. Just last week, Poland complained that around 20 Russian drones flew over its territory, a charge Moscow has denied.
Estonia’s Foreign Minister, Margus Tsahkna, condemned the breach, warning that Moscow’s actions have become increasingly provocative. “Russia has already violated Estonia’s airspace four times this year, which in itself is unacceptable. But today’s incursion… is unprecedentedly brazen,” he said.
He urged NATO and its allies to respond firmly, stating that “Russia’s increasingly extensive testing of boundaries and growing aggressiveness must be met with a swift increase in political and economic pressure.”
Russia, which continues to wage war in Ukraine, has often probed Western air defences. However, Tallinn insists the frequency and boldness of such sorties have intensified in recent months.
