The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed that six passengers sustained injuries on Tuesday morning after a Kaduna-bound train derailed at KM 49 between Kubwa Station and Asham Station.

The derailment, which occurred at about 11:09 a.m., led to chaos among passengers and prompted an immediate investigation into the cause of the accident.

In a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, the NSIB disclosed that though injuries were recorded, there were no fatalities. The Bureau added that a dedicated go-team had been dispatched to the site to gather evidence, interact with relevant stakeholders, and begin a comprehensive probe into the derailment.

“Current information available indicates that six persons sustained injuries, and no recorded fatalities. A go-team has been deployed to the site to gather evidence, engage relevant stakeholders, and commence an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident,” the statement read.

The Bureau also expressed sympathy to those affected. “The Bureau sympathises with those injured and extends its support to all passengers affected. The investigation will focus on identifying the direct and underlying factors that led to the derailment, with the aim of issuing safety recommendations to prevent a recurrence.”

Director General of the NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh, also conveyed his concern, noting that investigators had been dispatched to ensure the root cause is established. “We deeply sympathise with all who sustained injuries. The Bureau has deployed investigators to the site to ensure the root cause of this derailment is uncovered. Our commitment is to ensure safer rail transport for Nigerians through a transparent and independent investigation,” he said.

The incident occurred shortly after the train departed Abuja for Kaduna, sending passengers into panic. Witnesses described the moment as chaotic, with many rushing to escape the cabins. A passenger recounted that the train suddenly veered off the tracks, sparking confusion as people scrambled to safety.

The Bureau assured the public that updates would be provided as the investigation unfolds.
