Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Bella Shmurda has revealed how the tragic death of his close friend and frequent collaborator Mohbad fundamentally altered his perspective on life, describing the impact as a complete “brain reset” that led to a profound period of self-discovery.

Speaking during a recent livestream with popular TikToker Joblaq, the singer opened up about how losing his close friend and frequent collaborator, Mohbad, changed everything about his life and reshaped his outlook. The candid revelation offers a rare glimpse into the personal toll taken by one of Nigerian music’s most controversial tragedies.

Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, died under mysterious circumstances on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. His sudden death led to an outpouring of grief and anger across Nigeria, with fans and fellow artists demanding answers about the circumstances surrounding his passing.

The two artists had collaborated on several tracks, including “Pariwo,” showcasing their musical chemistry and close friendship. Following Mohbad’s death, Bella Shmurda honored his late friend with an emotional tribute song and video titled “My Brother.”

“RIP Mohbad. After he passed away, my brain reset; everything changed. The way I see things in life also changed,” Bella Shmurda reflected during the livestream. The artist drew parallels to childhood experiences, explaining how parental warnings about understanding life’s lessons later often prove prophetic.

“There was a time when our parents used to tell us when we misbehaved that, ‘You’re misbehaving, right? Don’t worry, very soon you will understand.’ I’m currently in that phase where I’m starting to understand. I have understood certain things,” he said.

The death of Mohbad sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s vibrant music industry and sparked controversy around his previous agency, Marlian Records, while highlighting troubling conditions young artists face. Naira Marley, a major Afrobeats star, was detained by police for questioning over Mohbad’s death, though he has denied involvement.

Mohbad was formerly signed to Naira Marley‘s Marlian Records and left the label in 2022. He was best known for hit songs including “Ponmo,” “Peace,” “Beast and Peace,” and “KPK (Ko Por Ke).” His posthumous success was evident when his record streams increased 702% between September 12 and 14, 2023.

Bella Shmurda’s comments represent one of the most personal accounts yet from a fellow artist about the lasting impact of Mohbad’s controversial death. His description of being in a “phase of rediscovery” suggests the tragedy has prompted deeper reflection on life, relationships, and the music industry’s pressures on young artists.

The livestream confession underscores how Mohbad’s death continues to reverberate through Nigeria’s music community, nearly two years after the incident that led to candlelight processions and protests across Lagos. For Bella Shmurda, the loss appears to have catalyzed a fundamental shift in worldview, transforming grief into what he describes as newfound clarity and understanding.
