A flash flood has wreaked havoc in Kebbi State, destroying two bridges, submerging vast farmlands, and damaging several houses across communities in Dandi and Suru local government areas.

The flood, which struck on Thursday, caused the collapse of a bridge in Fana township and another along the Dakingari-Kyangakwai road. One life was lost, while hundreds of farms and homes were submerged.

Deputy Governor of Kebbi State, Senator Umar Tafida, led a delegation on Saturday to commiserate with residents in the affected areas, including Fana, Aljannare, and Kampani villages. He presented relief materials and financial assistance worth ₦70 million to ease their suffering.

According to him, the state government donated ₦50 million and 600 bags of rice to victims in Fana, Maigwaza, and Tungar Beddi in Dandi LGA; ₦10 million and 250 bags of rice to Aljannare in Suru LGA; and ₦10 million and 250 bags of rice to Kampani village in Argungu LGA. He also announced that reconstruction of the collapsed bridges will begin soon.

The deputy governor urged residents living in flood-prone and riverine communities to relocate to higher grounds for safety, while praying for divine protection against future disasters.

Community leaders including the Chairman of Dandi, Mansur Isah, and Dandi constituency lawmaker, Sulaiman Abubakar, expressed gratitude to the state government for its swift intervention. Similarly, Suru council chairman, Muhammad Suru, commended Governor Nasir Idris’s administration for its prompt support.

At the Kamfani IDP camp in Argungu, Senator Tafida announced another ₦10 million donation with 250 bags of rice. The Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sama’ila Mera, also praised the government’s gesture and pledged the emirate’s continued support.

What you should know

Kebbi State has faced recurrent flooding due to its riverine terrain, often leaving communities vulnerable during heavy rains.

The recent disaster not only claimed a life but also destroyed homes, farmlands, and key bridges, disrupting livelihoods and transport links.

The state government’s ₦70 million relief intervention highlights its urgent response to support affected residents.
