President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will address a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday, June 12, 2025, as part of this year’s Democracy Day celebration. The event is scheduled to take place at the House of Representatives Chamber, National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

According to a statement released on Sunday by the House of Representatives Spokesman, Akin Rotimi, the sitting was formally communicated to members through an internal memo issued by House Clerk Yahaya Danzaria. Preliminary proceedings will begin at 11:00 a.m., with President Tinubu expected to arrive and deliver his address at noon.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.” President Tinubu will attend as the Special Guest of Honour.

Highlights of the programme will include goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly and the conferment of National Honours on select legislators by the President.

“This joint sitting represents a significant moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey,” the statement noted, emphasizing the National Assembly’s key role in defending democratic values, promoting accountability, and driving development during 26 years of uninterrupted civil governance.

Democracy Day, celebrated annually on June 12, commemorates the 1993 presidential election widely regarded as the most credible in Nigeria’s post-independence history. Though the election was won by the late Chief Moshood Abiola, it was controversially annulled by the military regime of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (retd).

The House urged all Nigerians to mark the occasion with “reflection, renewed patriotism, and commitment to building a more inclusive, prosperous, and united nation.”
