The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day celebration.

The announcement was made in a statement on Sunday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

Congratulating Nigerians on 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, the minister described June 12 as a symbol of the country’s collective journey toward justice, peace, and national renewal.

“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign and peace is sustained and our future assured,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo said.

He emphasized that the past 26 years reflect Nigeria’s resilience, strength, and courage, and signaled a renewed hope in the country’s democratic path.

Reaffirming the current administration’s commitment to democratic ideals, the minister said the government of President Bola Tinubu remains steadfast in promoting the universal values of democracy—anchored on the freely expressed will of the people in shaping Nigeria’s political, economic, social, and cultural direction.
