The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has issued a formal summons to Nigerian singer Darlington Okoye, widely known as Speed Darlington, compelling him to appear at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja on Friday, May 30, 2025, at 9 a.m.

The directive follows a viral Instagram Live video in which the artist allegedly admitted to engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl at a hotel, sparking widespread outrage across social media platforms.

In a letter dated May 28, 2025, NAPTIP emphasized that the allegations, if proven true, constitute a serious violation of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act of 2015, which addresses crimes involving the exploitation of minors.

The agency’s spokesperson underscored the gravity of the situation, stating, “We urge Mr. Okoye to comply with this invitation to avoid further action. The protection of children from all forms of abuse remains our priority.” The letter specifies that Speed Darlington is required to attend an interview at NAPTIP’s headquarters at 2028 Dalaba Crescent, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, to address the disturbing claims.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) initially responded to the video but cited jurisdictional limitations, as the location of the alleged incident was not disclosed. The DSVA promptly escalated the matter to NAPTIP for a comprehensive investigation.

In response to the backlash, Speed Darlington issued an apology via a follow-up Instagram video on May 28, 2025, claiming the confession was a fabricated publicity stunt to promote his latest song. “I am an artist. I need controversy to eat. If you are not trending, you are not getting booked,” he stated, describing the remarks as “cruel” and not meant to be taken seriously.

Despite his retraction, public outrage has intensified, with many Nigerians, including popular figures like Dr. Chinonso Egemba, also known as Aproko Doctor, calling for legal accountability, asserting that “children cannot give consent,” and labeling the alleged act as rape.
