Hollywood veteran Kevin Spacey made a rare public appearance on Tuesday night as he accepted a lifetime achievement award from the Better World Fund during a gala on the fringes of the Cannes Film Festival.
He described the moment as filled with “affection and love,” marking a contentious step in his gradual return to the public eye.
The two-time Academy Award-winning actor, whose once-stellar career was derailed by a series of sexual misconduct allegations, appeared visibly moved as he addressed reporters at the exclusive event.
I feel surrounded by so much affection and love. I’ve heard from so many of my friends and colleagues and co-stars in the last week since this award was announced,Spacey said. It’s very nice to be back.
When asked whether his presence in Cannes marked the beginning of a formal comeback, the 65-year-old simply responded: “I’m glad to be working, I’ll tell you that.”
Spacey’s appearance at the gala — his first red-carpet-related event in Cannes since 2016 — comes at a time when the festival has adopted a strict no-tolerance stance on sexual misconduct.
The policy shift, driven in part by persistent calls from #MeToo activists and mounting political pressure, has already led to actions against other figures.
Just last week, French actor Theo Navarro-Mussy was barred from the premiere of a competition film after facing rape allegations from three women — allegations he denies.
Despite Spacey’s visibility at the gala, Cannes officials have kept their distance. A spokesperson for the festival declined to comment when approached by AFP regarding his attendance, underscoring the delicacy of Spacey’s ongoing presence in the film world.
Though Spacey was acquitted in a high-profile trial in the United Kingdom in 2023, where he faced nine counts of alleged sexual offenses, and a U.S. civil case against him was dismissed in 2022, controversy continues to shadow his career.
In May 2023, the British documentary Spacey Unmasked aired fresh accusations, with 10 men alleging inappropriate behavior — none of whom were involved in the prior court proceedings.
Further legal troubles may loom. In February, former actor Ruari Cannon announced plans to take his allegations to Britain’s High Court, naming both Spacey and the Old Vic Theatre — where Spacey served as artistic director from 2003 to 2015 — as defendants.
Cannon alleges Spacey inappropriately touched him in London when Cannon was 21.
Throughout it all, Spacey has maintained his innocence, consistently denying any wrongdoing.
While the entertainment industry remains deeply divided over how to handle stars with such tainted legacies, Spacey’s reemergence at Cannes signals a calculated, albeit controversial, effort to step back into the spotlight.
