Carlo Ancelotti has been officially confirmed as the next head coach of the Brazil national team and will step into the role on May 26, immediately after overseeing Real Madrid’s final La Liga fixture against Real Sociedad.

The appointment marks a historic moment for Brazilian football, as Ancelotti, 65, becomes the first foreign coach to lead the country’s senior men’s team. Sports journalist David Ornstein reported, “Agreements are in place and contracts signed for him to become Brazil’s first foreign appointment in the men’s dugout.”

Although Ancelotti still had one year left on his contract with Real Madrid, the deal was finalized following amicable negotiations involving all parties. These discussions were primarily facilitated by Diego Fernandes, representing the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).

Recognized as one of the most accomplished managers in football history, Ancelotti now takes on the challenge of guiding Brazil through the remaining stages of their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. The ultimate goal is a record-breaking sixth title at the tournament scheduled to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The Athletic had previously disclosed that a contract was already secured for Ancelotti to manage Brazil through to the end of the 2026 World Cup. His tenure begins with a crucial World Cup qualifier against Ecuador on June 6.

He steps in for Dorival Junior, who was dismissed in March after serving for 14 months. The CBF has chosen a proven winner to navigate the Seleção through the remaining qualifiers and beyond.

Ancelotti returned to Madrid in 2021 and added more silverware to his illustrious résumé, capturing two La Liga titles and a Champions League crown. His managerial career includes appearances in eight major European finals and stints at elite clubs like AC Milan, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich.

Despite his historic achievements, Real Madrid’s current season has seen disappointing results. The team exited the Champions League in the quarter-finals at the hands of Arsenal, suffered a Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona, and currently trails league leaders—Hansi Flick’s side—by seven points with just three matches remaining.

As Brazil prepares to embark on a new chapter under Ancelotti’s leadership, expectations are sky-high for a turnaround in fortunes and a return to the pinnacle of world football.

What you should know
Carlo Ancelotti’s appointment as Brazil’s head coach marks a historic shift, being the nation’s first-ever foreign hire for the senior men’s team.

He joins after leaving Real Madrid and is set to lead Brazil through their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign and the tournament itself.

Known for his tactical acumen and calm leadership, Ancelotti is entrusted with reigniting Brazil’s dominance on the world stage, with a particular focus on claiming a sixth World Cup title.

His first match in charge will be against Ecuador on June 6.
