Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in London on Monday for a high-stakes visit aimed at reinforcing defence cooperation with the United Kingdom as his country continues to endure the impacts of more than three years of Russian aggression.

A senior Ukrainian source, speaking to AFP, confirmed that President Zelensky is scheduled to meet with several high-profile British figures, including King Charles III and Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The visit underscores Zelensky’s continuing efforts to secure critical international backing as Ukraine battles an entrenched Russian military campaign. According to a statement from his office, the primary focus of the trip is to “deepen defence cooperation” between Ukraine and the United Kingdom, a longstanding ally in the conflict.

In addition to the meetings with King Charles and Prime Minister Starmer, Zelensky is also slated to hold talks with the Speaker of the House of Commons, Lindsay Hoyle, and the Speaker of the House of Lords, Lord John McFall.

These engagements signal a deliberate outreach not just to the executive branch of the British government, but also to the legislative arms, strengthening the political foundation of UK-Ukraine relations.

Beyond political meetings, Zelensky is expected to connect with Ukrainian troops currently undergoing military training in the United Kingdom. This visit will allow him to witness firsthand the practical impact of the UK’s support and to encourage soldiers preparing to defend their homeland on the front lines.

He will also engage with representatives from leading think tanks to discuss evolving defence strategies, geopolitical risks, and international military collaboration.

Zelensky’s trip to the UK comes just ahead of a major NATO summit scheduled to be held in The Hague later this week, where the ongoing war in Ukraine and alliance unity are expected to take centre stage.

His diplomatic engagements form part of a broader push to maintain the momentum of Western military aid and political backing amid growing global fatigue and shifting attention to other conflicts.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in early 2022, the United Kingdom has been among the most vocal and proactive of Ukraine’s international supporters. The British government has imposed successive sanctions on Russia, targeting individuals, institutions, and industries linked to the Kremlin’s war machine.

In parallel, London has sent repeated waves of military assistance to Kyiv, including advanced weaponry, training support, and humanitarian aid.

With a new administration now in power following the election of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Zelensky’s visit also serves as an early opportunity to secure continued bipartisan support in Britain, and to ensure that the change in leadership does not affect the depth of cooperation.

The London leg of Zelensky’s tour is just one part of a broader diplomatic offensive aimed at ensuring that Ukraine remains a priority on the global stage. As international focus is increasingly stretched by other global crises, maintaining the attention and commitment of key partners like the UK is essential for Ukraine’s resilience and war strategy.

What you should know
President Zelensky’s visit to the United Kingdom is primarily focused on strengthening defence ties and ensuring sustained British support for Ukraine’s war effort.

He will meet with King Charles III, Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and other top officials, while also visiting Ukrainian troops in training and participating in defence-focused discussions ahead of a key NATO summit.
