YouTube Music has increased its monthly subscription fees in Nigeria, raising the premium individual plan from N900 to N1,300 and the premium family plan from N1,400 to N2,000.

The company disclosed the update in an email to subscribers, stating, “To continue delivering great service and features, we’re increasing your price to NGN 1,300.00/month. We don’t make these decisions lightly, but this update will allow us to continue to improve Music Premium and support the artists you listen to.”

This marks YouTube Music’s first subscription hike in Nigeria since 2020. The price adjustment follows a recent hike in South Africa, where YouTube Music raised its individual plan by 8 percent from R59.99 to R64.99, and its family plans increased by 11 percent to R99.99 from R89.99.

“We don’t make these decisions lightly, but this update will allow us to continue to improve Premium and support the creators and artists you watch on YouTube,” the company said.

YouTube Music’s Nigeria increase comes on the heels of Spotify’s 2024 increase, which raised its subscription fee to N1,300/month from N900. This follows a trend of subscription-based companies raising monthly subscription rates following the steep decline of the naira.

Several major tech companies, including Netflix, Google, DSTV, GOtv, and Microsoft have raised their subscription prices in Nigeria due to rising inflation (23.18 percent in February 2025) and the naira’s decline.

Since the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) unified the foreign exchange market in 2023, the naira has dropped significantly, falling from N471/$ before the move to N1,567.02 by April 3, 2025.
