The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has revealed that comprehensive reforms are set to be introduced in the FCT’s transportation system to enhance safety, efficiency, and user comfort.
Mr. Wike made this announcement on Friday in Abuja after inspecting the newly completed Kugbo and Mabushi Bus and Taxi Terminals, both of which are slated for commissioning as part of the events to commemorate President Bola Tinubu’s second year in office. The minister also inspected the finished access road to Giri District, another project scheduled for inauguration.
According to the minister, a reform committee is already working behind the scenes to finalize policies and procedures that will redefine urban transport operations within the territory. These new measures are expected to take effect before the official opening of the new bus and taxi terminals.
“Obviously, a lot of things will happen in the transport sector in the FCT. There will be a lot of reforms,” Wike said, highlighting the administration’s determination to ensure the sector operates with better security and regulation. “Because as part of security measures, we must know those involved in taxi business and what colour to use, so that if anything happens, we will be able to identify them,” he added.
He reassured residents that the FCT Administration is fully committed to strengthening the capital’s transportation infrastructure. One of the ongoing initiatives involves the removal of informal motor parks from roadsides, a move expected to declutter roads and streamline traffic flow.
Wike expressed satisfaction with the quality of the newly completed projects during his visit, although he noted a few areas requiring minor corrections. He praised the contractor for delivering a commendable job and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting local contractors in delivering high-quality infrastructure to Nigerians.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the construction of the Kugbo, Mabushi, and Central Area Bus and Taxi Terminals is part of broader efforts to modernize the capital’s public transport system. While the terminals at Kugbo and Mabushi are now ready, the Central Area terminal is still undergoing construction.
The minister also disclosed plans to further expand the city’s transportation facilities with the construction of two more terminals in Bwari and Gwagwalada. These additional terminals will serve growing populations in those districts and form part of the administration’s long-term urban mobility blueprint.
