Wike takes action as Tinubu dissolves committee

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has ordered the immediate closure of the secretariat that handled the sale of Federal Government houses in Abuja after President Bola Tinubu dissolved the committee overseeing the process.

Wike gave the directive on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, following the completion of the work of the Ad-hoc Committee on Sales of Federal Government Houses in the FCT.

The decision was communicated in a statement issued by the minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.

The secretariat was created to provide administrative support to the committee and manage issues linked to the sale of government-owned houses in the Federal Capital Territory.

Although the committee had completed its main assignment, the secretariat remained active to deal with matters that came from its previous activities.

With the latest directive, the secretariat will now cease operations.

Its responsibilities will be transferred to a new division created within the Department of Land Administration under the FCT Administration.

The new division is expected to take charge of outstanding matters connected to the former committee and handle other issues relating to the sale of Federal Government houses in the FCT.

The arrangement is expected to provide a permanent structure for dealing with housing sales after the end of the ad-hoc committee.

The move follows Tinubu’s decision to dissolve the committee after it completed its assignment.

Wike’s latest action means that the temporary administrative structure supporting the committee will no longer continue in its previous form.

The FCT Administration is expected to use the new division to manage pending cases and future responsibilities connected with government housing sales.

This will bring the functions previously carried out by the secretariat under the regular structure of the Department of Land Administration.

The development comes shortly after Wike also rejected reports linking him to plans to become Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 election.

Through his spokesman, the minister denied seeking the position and said his support for President Tinubu’s re-election bid was not dependent on receiving a campaign appointment.

Wike has remained a prominent political figure within the administration and has openly backed Tinubu since the 2023 presidential election.

His position as FCT minister has also kept him at the centre of political discussions ahead of the 2027 elections.

The closure of the housing sales secretariat therefore marks another administrative change within the FCT, with its duties now moving into a permanent department of the ministry.
