United Capitalise on Romero Red Card to Extend Carrick’s Perfect Run

Manchester United took full advantage of Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero’s dismissal to maintain their flawless start under Michael Carrick, sealing a 2-0 Premier League victory at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes brought an end to an eight-match winless streak against Spurs and strengthened the Red Devils’ grip on a top-four place in the league standings.

The result moved United within two points of third-placed Aston Villa while extending their cushion over sixth-placed Liverpool to five points. With English clubs performing strongly in Europe this season, a top-five finish is widely expected to be enough to secure Champions League qualification next term.

For Tottenham, any realistic hope of reaching the Champions League through league placement has long faded. Another bruising defeat under Thomas Frank leaves Spurs languishing in 14th position, deepening concerns about their campaign.

The match may also have significant repercussions for Romero, whose costly lapse in discipline proved decisive just days after his controversial comments aimed at Tottenham’s leadership. The Argentine defender had criticised the club’s lack of squad depth, calling it “disgraceful” following the close of the transfer window.

Frank later confirmed the outburst had been “dealt with internally”, but Romero’s leadership credentials had already come under scrutiny. The 27-year-old now faces a four-match suspension, having collected his second red card of the season and the sixth of his Spurs career.

Romero was sent off in the 29th minute after a reckless challenge that saw him catch Casemiro on the ankle just outside Tottenham’s penalty area. Even before the dismissal, United had looked the sharper side, and they soon turned their numerical advantage into a breakthrough.

Mbeumo calmly guided the ball into the bottom corner for his third goal in four appearances since Carrick assumed control. The move stemmed from a well-worked corner involving Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo, which left the Cameroon international free at the edge of the box.

United continued to dominate proceedings, with Amad Diallo and Matheus Cunha both seeing efforts ruled out for offside. Despite their control, the hosts had to wait until nine minutes from time to secure the points.

Fernandes, captaining by example, delivered another influential performance. He arrived at the back post to turn in Diogo Dalot’s cross, marking his 200th goal involvement for United in just 314 appearances.

Before kick-off, Carrick had suggested the club should not rush its decision on appointing a permanent manager. Yet the former midfielder, who enjoyed a distinguished playing career at Old Trafford, continues to strengthen his case as he oversees a remarkable revival following Ruben Amorim’s departure last month.

What you should know

Manchester United’s victory over Tottenham marked their fourth straight win under interim boss Michael Carrick, highlighting a sharp upturn in form since Ruben Amorim’s exit.

Cristian Romero’s red card proved pivotal, compounding Spurs’ struggles and raising further questions about his leadership after recent criticism of the club.

The win boosted United’s Champions League ambitions, while Tottenham slipped further down the table, facing growing pressure amid a difficult season.
