Contrary to some reports suggesting that students at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) are being forced to pay between N5,000 and N10,000 for examination dockets, our investigation has revealed that the fees are significantly lower.

While there have been allegations that certain UNILAG departments demand exorbitant charges for a docket to enter the exam hall, checks by Vanguard have shown that students are only required to pay between N500 and N2,500.

Kingsley Eze, a student from the Faculty of Arts, explained in an interview with Vanguard that his department charged just N500 for the docket, clarifying that such fees are not compulsory but are expected. “No, it cannot be that students are asked to pay N10,000 for the docket. However, I heard some departments charge as much as N2,500 for a docket,” he said, adding that there is no penalty for not paying these fees.

In the Faculty of Management Science, a 300-level student (who wished to remain anonymous) broke down the dues, noting that the total fees expected for the semester amount to N9,000. “These dues have been required since the beginning of the semester. They include N1,000 for Faculty dues, N2,000 for departmental dues, N2,000 for the Management Science Association, N2,000 for Actuarial Science, and N500 for club fees. We were not charged an additional N500 for the exam docket,” the student explained.

Overall, the evidence suggests that the allegations of UNILAG students being asked to pay excessively high fees for examination dockets are unfounded.
