The United Kingdom has issued a fresh travel warning to its citizens planning to visit Nigeria, advising them against travelling to parts of 11 states due to security concerns.
The warning was contained in the latest Nigeria travel advisory issued by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
The UK government also advised British citizens to make only essential trips to 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Under the advisory, the UK warned against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Gombe states in the North-East. Katsina and Zamfara states in the North-West were also included in the category.
In the South-South, the warning covers riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.
The affected areas include river and swamp communities that can only be accessed by boat and are not connected by road.
Meanwhile, Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa and Sokoto states were placed under the all-but-essential travel category.
The warning also covers Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara and Benue states in the North-Central region.
In the South-East, British citizens were advised to travel to Abia, Anambra and Imo states only when necessary.
The advisory also covers non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states, as well as the Federal Capital Territory, including Abuja.
The UK government said the stricter warning applies to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Katsina and Zamfara states, in addition to the specified riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River.
The all-but-essential travel warning covers Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara, Benue, Abia, Anambra and Imo states, along with the specified areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers and the FCT.
