US President Donald Trump has kicked off a dramatic renovation of the White House, beginning with the demolition of part of the East Wing to make way for a massive $250 million ballroom, the largest addition to the presidential residence in over a century.
Construction crews were seen tearing through the East Wing’s facade on Monday, leaving rubble and steel in their wake as Trump confirmed the start of the ambitious project.
Hosting a group of college baseball players at the White House, Trump hinted at the noise outside, saying, “Right on the other side you have a lot of construction that you might hear occasionally.”

Later, he announced on Truth Social that work had officially begun on what he called the “big, beautiful White House Ballroom.”
“The East Wing is being fully modernized as part of this process and will be more beautiful than ever when it is complete!” he wrote.
Traditionally home to the First Lady’s offices, the East Wing is connected to the main Executive Mansion by a covered walkway. Trump insisted the renovation would not affect the main residence, describing the East Wing as “completely separate.”
The proposed 90,000-square-foot ballroom will accommodate up to 1,000 guests, providing space for large state dinners and official functions that currently take place in temporary tents.
Trump said the ballroom is being privately funded by “many generous Patriots, Great American Companies, and, yours truly,” adding that it will serve “for generations to come.”
Last week, the president hosted an exclusive dinner for donors supporting the ballroom project, attended by major tech and defense industry figures from companies such as Amazon, Apple, Meta, Google, Microsoft, Palantir, and Lockheed Martin. Also in attendance were Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, the twin founders of the crypto platform Gemini.

The ballroom project forms part of a wider White House overhaul under Trump’s second term, which includes gold-themed renovations in the Oval Office and the paving over of the Rose Garden.
In another bold move, Trump has also revealed plans for a monumental triumphal arch in Washington, dubbed the “Arc de Trump”, continuing his pattern of fusing politics, symbolism, and showmanship.
