U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone on Wednesday, agreeing to initiate immediate peace talks to end the Ukraine war. Trump described the discussion as “lengthy and highly productive,” stating that both leaders also planned to visit each other’s countries.

The Kremlin confirmed that the call lasted nearly 90 minutes, with both leaders agreeing that it was time to work together toward peace. Trump, who previously vowed to end the war within 24 hours, emphasized that he and Putin aimed to stop the ongoing loss of life. Following the call, Trump announced plans to inform Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about the discussion, asserting that both Zelensky and Putin want peace.

Zelensky later confirmed a “meaningful” conversation with Trump, where they discussed possible pathways to peace. However, the unexpected dialogue has raised concerns in Europe, with key EU nations insisting that Ukraine and its allies must be central to any peace process.

The phone call follows recent diplomatic shifts, including a prisoner exchange between the U.S. and Russia. Additionally, Trump praised Putin’s use of his campaign slogan, “COMMON SENSE,” and expressed gratitude for the release of an American prisoner.

While Trump pushes for negotiations, Ukraine’s leadership remains cautious, particularly after Russia rejected a recent land-exchange proposal and launched fresh missile strikes on Kyiv. European leaders remain skeptical, emphasizing that any settlement must involve Ukraine directly.
