The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, which commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
The announcement was made on Friday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the world on the occasion.
He said the celebration was an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the values of compassion, humility and service associated with the life of Prophet Muhammad.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” the minister said.
“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them.”
The minister also urged Nigerians to use the occasion to pray for peace and unity across the country.
He said national unity was a responsibility shared by all citizens.
Tunji-Ojo called on Nigerians to celebrate peacefully, with restraint and respect for people of different backgrounds.
He wished the Muslim community a peaceful and joyful Eid ul Mawlid.
The minister also assured Nigerians that the Federal Government remained committed to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace across the country.
