President Bola Tinubu has formally inaugurated the newly appointed chairman of the National Population Commission, Aminu Yusuf, alongside two commissioners during a short ceremony held at the opening phase of the Federal Executive Council meeting.
Members of the council were present as the oath-taking was completed.

Yusuf, who hails from Niger State, was confirmed by the Senate on October 22, 2025, as the substantive head of the commission. On the same day, Joseph Haruna Kigbu from Nasarawa State and Tonga Betara Bularafa from Yobe State were also cleared to serve as commissioners of the NPC. Their swearing-in coincided with that of five permanent secretaries who likewise took their oaths of office during the event.
The appointment of Yusuf had earlier received the approval of the Council of State in October, signaling the final administrative endorsement before his confirmation. He now assumes leadership of the commission following the tenure of Nasir Isa Kwara, who has been in office since his appointment in 2020.
What you should know
Aminu Yusuf is now officially leading the National Population Commission after being sworn in by President Tinubu, following Senate confirmation and prior approval from the Council of State.
His emergence reflects the administration’s continued restructuring of key federal institutions. Yusuf replaces Nasir Isa Kwara, who led the commission for five years. The swearing-in also included two newly confirmed commissioners and five permanent secretaries, marking a broader administrative renewal across government agencies.
With Yusuf now in charge, the NPC is expected to advance its preparations for national demographic responsibilities and ongoing population data reforms.
