President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has advocated for the prompt execution of a national population census, emphasizing its importance for Nigeria’s development and the need to replace outdated data.

During a courtesy visit by the management team of the National Population Commission on Wednesday, Akpabio remarked that Nigeria’s reliance on estimates since the last census in 2006 had become unsustainable.

He expressed frustration over the inconsistency in population figures often cited by different sources.

He pointed out that the lack of accurate data continues to create uncertainty and obstruct proper national planning.

Akpabio emphasized that sound data is essential for governance.

He assured the commission of the legislature’s backing.

NPC Chairman, Nasir Kwarra, who led the team, said the visit was aimed at updating the Senate President on ongoing preparations and seeking further legislative support.

He expressed readiness to deliver a comprehensive and reliable census that will aid national development and policy decisions.

What you should know

Nigeria has not conducted a census since 2006, and Senate President Akpabio is pushing for an immediate one to end confusion over the country’s true population. Accurate data is seen as essential to effective planning in education, infrastructure, and national budgeting.
