President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been awarded Saint Lucia’s highest national distinction, the Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia (KCOSL), during his official visit to the Caribbean nation.

The announcement was made in a post by the Saint Lucian government on Monday.

During his address to a joint session of Saint Lucia’s Senate and House of Assembly, Tinubu emphasized the importance of building stronger connections between Africa and the Caribbean. He described his visit as part of efforts to forge economic partnerships and reinforce long-standing cultural and historical bonds.

Tinubu affirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding bilateral relations in areas such as trade, tourism, investment, education, and consular services.

In response, the Saint Lucian government announced that it would formalize diplomatic relations with Nigeria. This includes plans to implement a visa waiver for holders of diplomatic and official passports from OECS member states.

Saint Lucia also confirmed that Nigerian scholarships and the services of the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps would be extended to OECS citizens.

What you should know

President Tinubu’s recognition as Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia underscores his visit’s significance in reinforcing Nigeria’s influence in the Caribbean.

The move marks a renewed push for cooperation in education, diplomacy, and development between Nigeria and OECS nations.
