President Bola Tinubu has once again emphasized his government’s unwavering dedication to thoroughly reforming and revitalizing the Nigeria Police Force, along with other national security agencies.

In a renewed commitment to enhancing the country’s security framework, Tinubu assured Nigerians that his administration will persist in its efforts to fund modern tools, offer consistent training, and introduce robust welfare programs aimed at enhancing professionalism and motivation among police personnel.

The President’s message was conveyed on Wednesday during the second edition of the Nigeria Police Award and Commendation Ceremony held in Abuja. The statement was delivered by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who represented the President at the event.

Tinubu, through Akpabio, reiterated that his administration remains firmly committed to restructuring the Nigeria Police Force, recognizing the need for modern policing strategies grounded in up-to-date technologies, intelligence-led operations, meaningful community partnerships, and ongoing capacity development.

He noted that meaningful reform cannot occur without strategic investments in critical infrastructure, technological advancements, and support mechanisms that will elevate the operational standards and morale of officers at all levels.

Expressing his belief in the reforms underway, Tinubu urged police officers across the country to maintain high standards of professionalism, responsibility, and allegiance to their constitutional responsibilities. “You are entrusted with the safety and rights of the Nigerian people. The power you wield is not for intimidation, but for protection; not for abuse, but for service,” he said.

He encouraged officers to act with integrity and dignity, emphasizing the importance of rejecting any form of corruption or misconduct. “Uphold the rule of law. Reject misconduct and corruption. Let your actions reflect honour, integrity, and discipline,” he added.

While applauding the winners of the 2024 Police Awards, Tinubu acknowledged their dedication and called on them to continue in their pursuit of excellence, rather than become complacent in the face of recognition.

Senate President Akpabio, in his own remarks, announced a personal donation of ₦5 million to the family of the late Assistant Commissioner of Police, Aniedi Cecilia Udoh, who was posthumously awarded the 2024 Community Policing Advocate of the Year. Udoh, who served as the Area Commander in Ahoada, Rivers State, until her death in May, was originally from Akwa Ibom State.

Akpabio also highlighted his long-standing commitment to supporting the Nigeria Police, referencing his time as Governor of Akwa Ibom State. During his tenure, he provided the police with 350 patrol vehicles fitted with communication systems, four armoured personnel carriers, and marine policing facilities. In addition, he constructed a mobile police unit and a police secondary school, all at no cost to the Force.

Continuing his legacy of support in his current role, Akpabio revealed that he had overseen the completion of ten police stations in his senatorial district. “As Senate President, I have facilitated the completion of 10 police stations in my senatorial district. I am not tired of supporting the Police,” he stated. He further assured that the National Assembly remains committed to ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force receives the legislative backing and funding necessary to thrive.

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, also addressed attendees, stressing that the reform of the police is not merely rhetoric but a sustained promise. He underscored the importance of building a meaningful legacy through committed service to the Nigerian people. “This is not just about awards; it’s about legacy. Policing is not a transactional duty—it is a transformational mission, and the Nigerian people remain our most vital partners in this journey,” Egbetokun said.
