President Bola Ahmed Tinubu touched down at Chinua Achebe International Airport in Umueri, Anambra State, today, kicking off a highly anticipated official visit to commission a slew of transformative projects spearheaded by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo.
Clad in traditional Akwete Igbo fabric and a red cap, the president was greeted with pomp by Soludo, Deputy Governor Onyekachukwu Ibezim, and a host of dignitaries, including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and members of the Anambra House of Assembly.
This marks Tinubu’s second trip to Nigeria’s Southeast in 2025, following a January visit to Enugu, and signals a deepening partnership between the federal government and Anambra, a strategic economic hub in the region.
The visit, announced by Anambra’s Ministry of Information on May 3, 2025, centers on unveiling key infrastructure projects that showcase Soludo’s aggressive development agenda in under three years.
Among the highlights are the newly built Government House, Governor’s Lodge, Presidential Lodge, Solution Fun City, and Anambra County Club—projects that have eluded the state since its creation 34 years ago.
These, alongside extensive road networks, enhanced healthcare facilities, and youth empowerment initiatives, reflect Soludo’s vision of sustainable growth, earning praise from Anambra House Speaker Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze for attracting federal attention through “monumental achievements.” Tinubu is also set to host a high-level town hall at the refurbished Dr.
Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, engaging stakeholders to evaluate Anambra’s progress and foster national unity, as noted by presidential aide Fredrick Nwabufo.
The visit has sparked a festive atmosphere in Awka, with the city spruced up through beautification efforts and traffic diversions to ensure a smooth event.
Security chiefs, in a five-hour closed-door meeting on May 5, finalized robust arrangements, with the Anambra Police Command emphasizing inter-agency coordination to safeguard the president and public.
However, not all sentiments are celebratory. Some voices on X, like @odogwu_ogidi, criticized Soludo’s focus on projects like the Government House as “classless,” while others, including @apro_dawildcat, hailed the visit as a “carnival” and proof of Tinubu’s affection for the Igbo people.
The All Progressives Grand Alliance dismissed rumors of tension, affirming a warm welcome for the president.
Beyond infrastructure, the visit offers Soludo a platform to push critical issues.
Analysts, including Paul Nwosu in TheNewsGuru, urge the governor to advocate for federal intervention in Anambra’s gully erosion crisis, a “national emergency” straining state resources, and to press for the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to de-escalate Southeast tensions.
Proposals for designating Anambra as a Special Economic Zone and creating a Nigerian Palm Produce Board to boost palm oil exports are also on the table, aligning with Soludo’s revival of the sector.
