President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Olayinka Babalola on his emergence as the newly elected President of Rotary International for the 2026/2027 term.

Babalola, who is a long-standing member of the Rotary Club of Trans Amadi in Nigeria, was chosen by the Rotary International Board of Directors following the resignation of SangKoo Yun, who stepped down due to health-related reasons. He will officially assume the leadership position on July 1, 2026.

The Nigerian Rotarian’s elevation marks a historic moment, as he becomes only the second African, and second Nigerian, to lead the prestigious global humanitarian body in its 120-year history.

In his congratulatory message, President Tinubu highlighted Babalola’s dedication and service, noting his outstanding contributions through the Nigerian Society of Engineers and Rotary International. He emphasized that Babalola’s long-standing record of philanthropy and commitment to community-driven projects had not only improved countless lives but also strengthened communities while promoting peace, development, and human dignity.

According to a statement released on Friday by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Babalola’s elevation as a source of inspiration for millions of Nigerians, particularly the youth. He stressed that the new Rotary International leader embodies the values of vision, integrity, and service, demonstrating that Nigerians can achieve global recognition and lead impactful change.

“The President also believes Babalola’s election will inspire millions of Nigerians, especially the younger generation, by demonstrating that anyone can achieve global recognition and lead transformative change with vision, integrity, and dedication to service,” the statement read.

President Tinubu further assured Babalola of Nigeria’s unwavering support as he prepares to step into his new role. “As you prepare to assume office, you can count on our support and encouragement to continue championing humanitarian causes, fostering international partnerships, and promoting the spirit of service to humanity,” the President affirmed.

Rotary International had earlier on Thursday announced Babalola’s election in an official statement issued by Ibim Semenitari, the Rotary Public Image Coordinator for Africa Zone 22, Region 27.

The statement detailed Babalola’s professional and humanitarian background, noting his affiliations with the Nigerian Society of Engineers, the Institute of Safety Professionals, and the Association of Change Management Practitioners. He is also a member of the Jericho Business Club in Port Harcourt, where he lives with his wife, Preba.

It added that Babalola’s contributions extend to global humanitarian projects, including his role as a trustee of ShelterBox UK and as a director of the Safe Blood Africa initiative. He is also a member of the Arch Klumph Society and has supported The Rotary Foundation through a named endowment.

Babalola’s service has earned him numerous recognitions, including the Africa Centennial Heroes Award, the Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service, and the RI Service Above Self Award.

Rotary International presidents serve a one-year term, providing leadership, presiding over the Board of Directors, and representing the organization worldwide. Babalola’s election has been widely celebrated across Nigeria and Africa, as it reflects another milestone of African excellence and leadership on the international stage.
