Inter Miami striker Luis Suarez has issued a public apology after spitting at a Seattle Sounders staff member during chaotic scenes following the Sounders’ 3-0 victory in the Leagues Cup final on Sunday.
The 38-year-old Uruguayan forward shared his remorse in a statement on Instagram, admitting his actions were unacceptable.
“It was a moment of great tension and frustration, where right after the match things happened that shouldn’t have happened, but that doesn’t justify the reaction I had,” Suarez wrote. “I was wrong and I sincerely regret it.”

The match at Seattle’s Lumen Field ended in disappointment for the star-studded Inter Miami squad led by Lionel Messi, with Seattle securing the trophy in emphatic fashion. Immediately after the whistle, Suarez clashed with Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas, grabbing the 20-year-old in a headlock. The confrontation quickly escalated into a mass altercation involving both players and staff.
As Suarez was being separated from the melee, cameras captured him spitting at a member of Seattle’s security staff, an act that has since sparked outrage.
“I feel bad about what happened, and I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to acknowledge it and apologize to everyone who felt hurt by what I did,” Suarez added in his post.

The fallout now leaves tournament and league officials to determine what disciplinary measures he will face. Inter Miami, in its own statement on X, condemned the incident:
“These actions do not reflect the values of our sport, and we remain committed to upholding the highest standards of sportsmanship both on and off the pitch. We are working closely with Leagues Cup and MLS officials to ensure the situation is addressed appropriately.”
Despite the controversy, Suarez signaled his determination to focus on the remainder of the MLS season. “We know there’s still a lot of the season ahead, and we’re going to work together to achieve the successes that this club and all of its fans deserve,” he wrote.

The veteran striker’s reputation has long been shadowed by controversy. Suarez was infamously expelled from the 2014 World Cup after biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini, one of several biting incidents in his career. In 2011, while playing in England, he was handed an eight-game suspension for allegedly racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra. He also drew global criticism at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa after deliberately handling the ball on the goal-line to deny Ghana a dramatic late winner in the quarter-finals.
With officials now reviewing Sunday’s clashes, Suarez once again finds himself at the center of football’s disciplinary spotlight.
