Inter Miami forward Luis Suarez has been handed a six-match suspension for his role in the chaotic scenes that followed last weekend’s Leagues Cup final defeat to the Seattle Sounders.

The 38-year-old Uruguay international was sanctioned for spitting at a Sounders staff member after Miami’s 3-0 loss in Seattle. Tournament officials confirmed on Friday that the ban will apply only to next year’s Leagues Cup, though Major League Soccer has reserved the option of imposing further penalties.

The disciplinary ruling also included punishments for others involved: Miami’s Sergio Busquets received a two-game ban, Tomas Aviles was suspended for three matches, while Seattle staff member Steven Lenhart was barred from five games.

The trouble began immediately after the final whistle when Suarez confronted 20-year-old Obed Vargas, putting the Sounders midfielder in a headlock. A mass brawl erupted involving players and staff from both teams before officials restored order. Cameras later captured Suarez spitting toward a Seattle security staffer, further fueling outrage.

Suarez issued an apology on Thursday, acknowledging his actions were unjustifiable. “It was a moment of great tension and frustration, where right after the match things happened that shouldn’t have happened, but that doesn’t justify the reaction I had,” he wrote on Instagram. “I was wrong and I sincerely regret it… I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to acknowledge it and apologize to everyone who felt hurt by what I did.”

The incident has once again highlighted Suarez’s turbulent disciplinary record. He was infamously expelled from the 2014 World Cup after biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini, faced multiple club-level bans for similar conduct, and served an eight-game suspension in 2011 for racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra. He also courted controversy at the 2010 World Cup for a deliberate handball that denied Ghana a historic quarter-final victory.

Despite his decorated career at Liverpool, Barcelona, and with Uruguay, Suarez’s legacy continues to be overshadowed by repeated misconduct.

What You Should Know

Luis Suarez’s six-match suspension adds another chapter to his long history of on-field controversies.

While the ban is limited to next year’s Leagues Cup, it reinforces scrutiny over his behavior and raises questions about whether his disciplinary issues will overshadow his final playing years.
