The Lagos State Government has declared Thursday, August 20, 2026, a work-free day for residents to celebrate this year’s Ìṣẹ̀ṣe Day.
The Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Idris Aregbe, announced the decision in a statement issued on Wednesday.
Aregbe said Ìṣẹ̀ṣe is an important part of Yoruba culture and spirituality and is still practised by millions of people in Nigeria and other parts of the world.
He noted that Yoruba communities and cultural groups in countries including Cuba, Brazil and other Caribbean countries also continue to preserve the traditions.
Ìṣẹ̀ṣe Day is celebrated after a week of traditional activities. Lagos has observed the day as a work-free day since 2023.
The state government said the decision followed a request from the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs.
Governor Sanwo-Olu has continued the annual practice as part of his administration’s efforts to support indigenous culture and allow different religious and cultural groups to practise their traditions.
This year’s Ìṣẹ̀ṣe Day celebration will feature traditional prayers, rituals, processions, drumming and other cultural activities associated with the Òrìṣà.
The events are being organised by the Association of African Traditional Religion Nigeria and Overseas.
The Lagos State Government also urged residents participating in the celebration to maintain peace and respect people from other religious and cultural backgrounds.
