The Kano State Government has intensified its action against structures considered illegal across the state, marking more than 50 properties, including Azman University, for investigation and possible demolition.

The exercise, led by the Director General of the Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS), Dr. Dalhatu Aliyu Sani, focused on identifying buildings that either lack valid ownership documents or were erected in areas not approved for development.

During the operation carried out on Tuesday, officials visited several locations across Kano, including Maiduguri Road, Rijiyar Gwangwan, Ladi Makole, Matar Fada Road and other surrounding areas.

Many properties were sealed, while others were marked for further review.

According to the state government, the affected structures include buildings constructed under high-tension electricity lines, on drainage channels and in other restricted locations.

Authorities said such developments violate planning regulations and pose safety concerns.

Sani explained that property owners have been directed to present documents proving ownership and approval for their developments.

He said those who provide genuine documents will be allowed to retain their properties without any financial penalty, while those unable to justify their claims may face legal consequences.

He stated that the exercise, tagged “Operation Show Your Document,” is aimed at ensuring that all landowners and developers comply with existing laws guiding land use and physical development in the state.

At Azman University, officials did not shut down academic activities.

Students continued their normal studies while some structures within the institution were marked pending verification of relevant documents.

The KANGIS boss said the university complex contains several other facilities, including a filling station and industrial establishments, which would also be subjected to document verification during the ongoing exercise.

He maintained that the operation is not directed at any individual, organization or political group but is part of efforts to enforce planning regulations uniformly across Kano State.

Sani further stated that every property owner, regardless of social status or influence, must comply with the same legal requirements. He said no person or institution would be exempted from the verification process.

The government also appealed to residents and property owners to cooperate with the enforcement committee by presenting all necessary documents when requested.
