South African Rapper Shebeshxt Faces Attempted Murder Probe Following Polokwane Shooting

South African hip-hop artist Shebeshxt, born Lehlogonolo Katlego Chauke, is at the center of a criminal investigation after allegedly shooting a fellow motorist during what police describe as a road rage incident that spiraled violently out of control in Polokwane on Tuesday, October 19th.

The 29-year-old rapper, known for his controversial persona and street-oriented lyrics, now faces potential attempted murder charges following a confrontation that has reignited debates about celebrity privilege and accountability in South Africa’s justice system.

According to witness accounts and police reports, the altercation erupted on a busy Polokwane street when Shebeshxt and another driver became embroiled in a dispute over alleged reckless driving. What began as a typical traffic disagreement quickly escalated into a heated verbal exchange between the two men shouting from their respective vehicles.

The situation took a dangerous turn when both drivers pulled into a nearby petrol station, where the confrontation became physical. It was at this location, according to multiple witnesses, that the incident turned deadly serious.

A source with knowledge of the investigation told reporters that the victim sustained a gunshot wound to the upper abdomen during the altercation. Emergency services rushed him to a local hospital, where he remains in intensive care. Medical staff have described his condition as serious but stable.

The Westenburg Police Station has confirmed that a case of attempted murder was officially opened following the incident.

In a development that has generated significant controversy, Shebeshxt was briefly detained by police before being released shortly afterward. This swift release has become a flashpoint for criticism, particularly from the victim’s family, who have accused law enforcement of preferential treatment.

According to police sources, the specialized murder and robbery unit took over the investigation from the Westenburg Police Station, citing the need for more comprehensive preliminary investigations before recording formal statements from both the rapper and the victim.

However, this procedural decision has done little to quell the anger of the victim’s relatives. A family source, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed deep frustration with what they perceive as mishandling of the case by authorities.

“We are extremely disappointed with how this matter is being handled,” the source stated. “It appears that there are two standards of justice in this country—one for celebrities and another for ordinary citizens. If the police do not act swiftly to rearrest him, we may be forced to take matters into our own hands.”

The family’s warning has raised concerns about potential vigilante action and underscores the volatile nature of the situation.

Investigators are now examining several critical aspects of the case, including whether Shebeshxt’s actions could be characterized as self-defense. Sources close to the investigation reveal that authorities are also verifying whether the firearm allegedly used in the shooting was legally registered to the rapper.

These investigative threads could prove crucial in determining whether charges will ultimately be filed and what those charges might entail. South African law allows for the use of reasonable force in self-defense, but the application of this principle in road rage incidents remains a contentious legal area.

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the ongoing investigation in a statement to the media.

“We confirm that police in Westenburg outside Polokwane are investigating an attempted murder incident that happened on 19 October 2025 in Polokwane,” Ledwaba stated.

In a significant development highlighting the seriousness with which authorities are treating the case, Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has personally intervened, directing the specialized murder and robbery unit to take charge of the investigation.

Colonel Ledwaba provided further details on the investigation’s progress: “The police have a person of interest, and when done with investigations, they will take necessary actions. The investigations have been intensified, the team is tightening loose ends, and an arrest is imminent at this stage.”

The police spokesperson also appealed for public patience, urging citizens to allow investigators to complete their work without interference—a comment likely directed at both social media speculation and the victim’s family’s warnings about taking independent action.

This incident has reignited longstanding discussions about celebrity accountability in South Africa’s criminal justice system. Critics have long argued that wealthy and famous individuals often receive preferential treatment from law enforcement, while supporters of the current investigative approach maintain that thorough preliminary investigations are necessary before making arrests in complex cases.

The case also highlights the persistent problem of road rage violence in South Africa, where traffic confrontations occasionally escalate to serious violence. Road safety advocates have called for greater public awareness about de-escalation techniques and the legal consequences of allowing minor traffic disputes to spiral out of control.

Shebeshxt, who has built his reputation on a provocative public image and gritty musical style, has not issued any public statement regarding the incident. His management team has not responded to requests for comment.

As the investigation continues, all eyes remain on the Limpopo police’s murder and robbery unit. With authorities promising that an arrest is imminent, the coming days will prove crucial in determining whether South Africa’s justice system can balance thorough investigation with public accountability.

The victim remains hospitalized, fighting for his life, while his family waits for what they hope will be swift justice. Meanwhile, the broader public watches closely to see whether celebrity status will influence the outcome of this high-profile case.
