President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone has been appointed the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government, succeeding Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, whose two-term tenure has come to a close.
The transition took place during the 67th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority held in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city.
The leadership handover came amid prior speculation that Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye had been elected to the role following a private meeting held ahead of the official session. However, those rumours were laid to rest as President Tinubu formally passed the baton to President Bio during the plenary proceedings.

In his acceptance speech, President Bio outlined an ambitious agenda centred on four strategic priorities for the regional bloc: the restoration of constitutional order and the strengthening of democratic governance, the renewal of regional security cooperation, the promotion of economic integration across West Africa, and the rebuilding of institutional trust and credibility within ECOWAS.
President Tinubu’s term as Chairman began on July 9, 2023, following his election in Guinea-Bissau. He was re-elected for a second term exactly a year later, during the 66th Ordinary Session held in Abuja. His extended tenure was supported by fellow heads of state who sought to maintain stability and leadership continuity amid pressing regional challenges, particularly around security, political transitions, and economic growth.
Under Tinubu’s chairmanship, ECOWAS grappled with several complex issues, including the withdrawal of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso from the bloc following military takeovers in those countries. The formation of the breakaway Alliance of Sahel States by the three nations marked one of the most serious fractures in ECOWAS history, prompting efforts by Tinubu and other leaders to pursue dialogue and regional reintegration.
Now assuming the reins, President Bio is expected to navigate these same fault lines while charting a new course for ECOWAS. His leadership will be crucial in shaping the bloc’s response to challenges such as unconstitutional regime changes, violent extremism, economic dislocation, and fractured unity within the region.
As the session concluded, President Tinubu pledged his full support to his successor and reiterated his commitment to regional peace and prosperity. With President Bio at the helm, ECOWAS enters a new chapter—one that will test the bloc’s capacity to preserve unity, uphold democratic norms, and spur development in a region undergoing profound transformation.
