A new chapter opened at the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Friday as Professor Segun Aina formally assumed office as the board’s sixth substantive Registrar, taking over from Professor Ishaq Oloyede at a handover ceremony at JAMB’s headquarters in Bwari, Abuja.

The 40-year-old computer engineering professor took over the reins of the board on Friday, the same day Oloyede’s two-term tenure of ten years officially came to an end.

The changeover closes out one of the most consequential chapters in the board’s history and opens what many observers are already framing as a generational shift in Nigeria’s examination administration.

President Bola Tinubu had appointed Aina back in May, when he was still 39, as the substantive registrar to succeed Oloyede. The appointment, announced by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, drew swift attention across the country, not least because of Aina’s age. He is now the youngest person to ever serve as JAMB registrar.

With his inauguration, JAMB witnesses a change of leadership as Aina becomes its sixth substantive registrar, succeeding Professor Oloyede’s remarkable ten-year tenure.

Aina arrives at the role with a technocrat’s résumé rather than a traditional bureaucrat’s. He is a renowned academic and systems engineering expert with extensive experience in examination administration, digital infrastructure, and public sector reform.

He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, a Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security, and a doctorate in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University in the United Kingdom, in addition to completing the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School.

Notably, his relationship with JAMB is not new it began during his National Youth Service Corps year, when he gained firsthand experience in national admissions processes.

He went on to become a professor of computer engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, building a career of more than 15 years at the intersection of technology, governance, and institutional reform, advising both federal and state governments on digital transition and systems design.

At 39, he had already become one of Nigeria’s youngest professors of computer engineering, and he has previously consulted for other major examination bodies, including NECO and NABTEB, on ICT systems and examination integrity.

The appointment drew a warm reception from political and traditional leaders. Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State described Aina as an outstanding academic whose scholarly contributions had broadened knowledge, calling his elevation to head JAMB a recognition of excellence and competence.

Commentators have framed the transition as a delicate balancing act. Analysts note the need to consolidate the institutional gains painstakingly built over the years by successive registrars, with Oloyede’s tenure representing a particularly significant chapter, and Aina is expected to preserve those achievements while introducing fresh ideas suited to a rapidly evolving educational landscape.

His inauguration also comes at a time when collaboration with critical stakeholders has become increasingly important for the board.

As Aina settles into office, attention will now turn to how he manages JAMB’s core mandate, the annual conduct of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for millions of Nigerian candidates, while carrying forward the digital-infrastructure reforms that defined his academic and consulting career.

His tenure begins amid high expectations, both for continuity with the reforms of the Oloyede era and for the kind of technological innovation his background suggests he is uniquely positioned to deliver.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Segun Aina’s inauguration as JAMB’s sixth registrar, which marks more than a routine handover at 40, he is the youngest person to ever hold the position, succeeding Ishaq Oloyede’s decade-long tenure.

What stands out most is the nature of his appointment: a computer engineering professor with deep roots in digital systems and examination technology is now steering an institution responsible for millions of Nigerian students’ academic futures.

This signals a generational and technological shift at JAMB; the challenge ahead will be whether Aina can preserve Oloyede’s institutional gains while modernizing the board for a new era.
