Popular Nigerian bank speaks on shutting down

Access Bank Plc has denied reports circulating on social media and WhatsApp claiming that the financial institution is shutting down, describing the information as false and misleading.

The bank assured customers, partners and the public that it remains financially stable and continues to provide banking services without any interruption.

The clarification was made in a statement issued by the bank following the spread of the rumour online.

It said all its branches, banking operations and subsidiaries are functioning normally and customers can continue carrying out transactions as usual.

Access Bank also disclosed that it has started working with the appropriate regulatory authorities and security agencies to trace those behind the false report.

It said anyone found responsible for creating or spreading the fake information would face legal action in line with the country’s laws.

The bank further reminded the public that producing or sharing false information capable of causing panic, damaging the reputation of individuals or organisations, or reducing public confidence in institutions is an offence under Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024.

It urged Nigerians to ignore the fake shutdown notice and avoid forwarding or sharing unverified messages.

The bank also advised customers and other stakeholders to rely only on updates released through its official and verified communication channels for accurate information.

Access Bank expressed appreciation to its customers, business partners and stakeholders for their continued support and confidence, assuring them that it remains committed to providing reliable banking services across its operations.
