Popular media personality and online influencer, Scott Iguma, has been granted bail by the Lagos State High Court following a brief but highly publicized remand in prison custody.
The decision, handed down on Monday, comes three days after his controversial arrest and detention sparked nationwide debate and outrage on social media.
Iguma, who gained attention for publicly calling out the well-known real estate firm, PWAN Group, for allegedly defrauding customers, found himself in legal trouble after submitting over 130 petitions to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on behalf of purported victims. According to Scott, PWAN issued only receipts instead of actual land allocations, leaving many of their customers stranded and disenfranchised.
The situation escalated last Thursday when Iguma was arrested for defamation following a petition filed by PWAN’s founder, Augustine Onwumere. He was arraigned the next day and remanded in prison pending further hearing.
The arrest triggered a wave of condemnation across various social media platforms. Prominent voices such as influencer Tunde Ednut, controversial activist VeryDarkMan, actor Stanley Ontop, and singer Kokopee rallied in his defense, accusing both PWAN and the Nigeria Police of targeting a whistleblower rather than investigating the alleged fraud.
In a video shared on his Instagram page, singer Kokopee confirmed the court’s decision to grant Scott bail, revealing that the legal team was working swiftly to satisfy the bail requirements.
“After the hearing, the judge has granted Scott Iguma bail. His legal team are currently working round the clock to make sure all bail conditions are met,” Kokopee stated. “One thing I must tell Nigerians is that we can not be silent when it looks like oppression is around the corner. Injustice for one is injustice to all. PWAN be warned, if you say you are innocent, come forward with proof.”
The case has now taken on broader implications, with civil society observers and legal analysts weighing in on the balance between defamation laws and freedom of speech, particularly in the context of whistleblower protection.
As of press time, PWAN Group has not released an official statement in response to the bail ruling or the mounting public backlash.
Scott Iguma’s legal battle continues to evolve, and all eyes remain on the judiciary and law enforcement as Nigerians demand transparency, accountability, and justice for all involved.
