Russia announced on Friday that peace talks with Ukraine were on “pause,” while President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Vladimir Putin still aims to capture the entire country.
US President Donald Trump said his patience with the Kremlin was “running out,” as NATO vowed to strengthen its eastern defenses following Russian drone incursions into Polish airspace this week.
The setback to diplomacy comes as Moscow conducts large-scale military exercises with its ally Belarus, underscoring rising tensions across the region.

Negotiations in Limbo
Despite Trump’s efforts to host direct talks in Alaska between Putin and Zelensky, little progress has been made since Russia’s February 2022 invasion.
“Our negotiators have the opportunity to communicate through channels. But for now, it is probably more accurate to talk about a pause,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Zelensky, speaking in Kyiv, cautioned the West against trusting Putin. “Putin’s goal is to occupy all of Ukraine,” he said, urging allies to press China to use its influence over Moscow.

Trump’s Warning
Trump told Fox News that his patience with Russia was “sort of running out and running out fast.” He criticized both sides for missing chances to strike a deal, warning the US may need to take a tougher stance.
Ukraine insists it will not cede territory and has called for a direct Putin-Zelensky summit. Putin, however, has ruled this out and threatened to target Western troops if deployed as peacekeepers without his approval.
The conflict has already killed tens of thousands, displaced millions, and devastated Ukraine’s eastern and southern regions.

Drone Incursions Heighten Tensions
Poland reported that 19 Russian drones entered its airspace on Wednesday, with three shot down after NATO scrambled jets. Warsaw and its allies denounced the breach as a “provocation.”
NATO chief Mark Rutte pledged to reinforce the alliance’s eastern flank, with Denmark, France, Britain, and Germany deploying additional assets.
Meanwhile, Britain announced new sanctions on Russia, while the EU extended penalties against more than 2,500 Russian officials and entities.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk rejected Trump’s suggestion that the drone incident could have been accidental, warning his country was closer to “open conflict” than at any point since World War II.
Russia denied targeting Poland and dismissed the claims as unsubstantiated.

Military Drills with Belarus
On Friday, Russia and Belarus began joint drills near Poland and Lithuania, as well as in the Baltic and Barents seas. Videos from Russia’s defense ministry showed armored vehicles, helicopters, and navy ships in action.
Poland responded by announcing it would deploy 40,000 troops near the Belarusian border for the duration of the exercises.
