Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo has played down talk of a personal showdown with Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal ahead of Sunday’s UEFA Nations League final in Munich, insisting the match is “one team versus another.”

The 40-year-old Portugal captain, who scored the decisive goal in their semi-final win over Germany, responded to the growing media narrative of a generational face-off with 17-year-old Yamal, who starred with a brace in Spain’s dramatic 5-4 victory over France.

“There are different generations — one is coming in, another is exiting the stage,” said Ronaldo. “If you want to see me as another generation, that’s OK. But when you talk about a clash between Cristiano and someone else, that’s not how it works. It’s about the team.”

Ronaldo praised Spain as “maybe the best national team in the world” and acknowledged Yamal’s talent, urging the media to ease the pressure on the rising Barcelona star. “The kid has been doing very well,” he said. “But what I ask is for you to let him grow… He’s just three years older than my son.”

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente echoed Ronaldo’s sentiments, describing Yamal as “special” and “very mature for his age,” while calling Ronaldo “a legend” and “an example” of commitment and work ethic.

Portugal are aiming to win their second Nations League title, while defending champions Spain seek back-to-back trophies. Spain, currently unbeaten in competitive matches since March 2023, have won 16 of their last 18 games.

What you should know
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lamine Yamal represent the bookends of two football generations. But as both nations head into the Nations League final, the focus remains firmly on team strength. Spain’s form and Portugal’s experience promise a gripping clash of styles and eras.
