The Rivers State House of Assembly has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to forward the list of commissioner nominees for screening and confirmation.

The call was made on Thursday as lawmakers resumed sitting, less than 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu lifted the emergency rule in the state.

During the plenary, presided over by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, the Order Paper contained just one item, a motion to set a legislative agenda for the remainder of the 10th Assembly’s year.

Although Governor Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, are expected to formally resume leadership, they had yet to arrive at the Government House in Port Harcourt as of 4:50 p.m. on Thursday.

Earlier in the day, a large crowd of supporters had gathered at the Government House to welcome them, while emergency service officials were on standby.

Fubara and his deputy had been out of office for six months following Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers over a political crisis. The proclamation had suspended the governor, his deputy, and the Assembly members.

On Wednesday, the emergency rule was officially lifted, with the former administrator, retired Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, handing over power and urging political stakeholders to embrace dialogue and mutual respect.

What You Should Know

The Rivers Assembly has urged Governor Fubara to submit commissioner nominees as governance resumes after six months of emergency rule.

President Tinubu’s directive had suspended elected officials, but power has now been restored, with Admiral Ibas handing over and calling for peace among political actors in Rivers State.
