Qatar’s Foreign Ministry has summoned the Iranian ambassador in Doha following Tehran’s recent missile strike on a US military installation situated in the Gulf nation.

The diplomatic move comes in response to Monday evening’s retaliatory attack by Iran on the Al-Udeid Air Base, a facility that hosts American forces. The strike was launched in apparent response to a US-led offensive on three significant nuclear installations within Iranian territory, an operation conducted in support of Israel.

In its official communication to the Iranian envoy, Qatari authorities emphasized that the missile strike represented a grave breach of regional protocols and longstanding diplomatic norms.

The Foreign Ministry reiterated that the attack runs contrary to the principles of good neighbourly relations and the close ties that have historically existed between Qatar and Iran. Officials stressed that Qatar has long promoted dialogue and engagement with Tehran, and has invested heavily in diplomatic efforts to maintain peace and cooperation in the region.

The ministry also disclosed that Doha had notified the United Nations Security Council of the incident. In a formal message addressed to the Council and UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Qatar outlined its deep concern over what it termed a highly dangerous escalation.

The letter warned that the missile strike posed a direct risk to peace and security across the Gulf and the wider Middle East.

In its correspondence with the UN, Qatar called upon the Security Council to live up to its global mandate by urgently facilitating a comprehensive and immediate ceasefire.

The appeal underlined the need to prevent further deterioration of the already volatile situation in the region, which has witnessed a cascade of retaliatory strikes since hostilities between Iran and Israel intensified.

At the time of the attack, the Al-Udeid base—widely regarded as the largest US military installation in the Middle East and typically accommodating about 10,000 military and civilian personnel—had reportedly been evacuated, minimizing potential casualties.

Although Iranian missiles were aimed at the base, Qatar’s air defence system successfully intercepted the projectiles.

Shortly before the missile launch, Qatar temporarily closed its airspace as a precautionary measure. Once the immediate threat had passed, the airspace was reopened. Similarly, Bahrain and Kuwait—both of which also host US military operations—briefly shut down their airspace in response to the unfolding crisis but resumed normal operations not long after.

The incident marks a significant turning point in the simmering tensions between Iran and the United States and has prompted renewed international calls for de-escalation. Qatar’s stance remains firmly rooted in diplomacy, as it continues to advocate for peaceful resolutions amid rising instability in the region.

What you should know
Al-Udeid Air Base is the largest US military base in the Middle East, located in Qatar. It plays a critical role in American operations across the region. Though Iran’s recent missile strike was intercepted without casualties, the act significantly heightened geopolitical tensions and placed Qatar—historically a mediator—at the center of a deepening conflict.
