Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has dismissed as false the circulating images claiming he met with US President Donald Trump and Musiliu “MC Oluomo” Akinsanya, Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

In a statement posted Wednesday on his X handle titled “Clarification on Fake News and Photos”, Obi said the images and accompanying stories were fabricated to mislead Nigerians.

“My attention has been drawn to some pictures currently circulating on social media, falsely portraying meetings I never had. One of such images purports to show me with US President Donald Trump, alongside a fabricated claim that he praised me,” he stated.

“Another seeks to depict me with MC Oluomo in his office. Let me state categorically that both pictures are fake and doctored, and the accompanying stories are entirely false. I have not met Mr Trump recently, nor have I had any such meeting with MC Oluomo,” Obi added.

He warned that the fabrications underscore the dangers of fake news and disinformation, which he described as tactics “deliberately designed to confuse, misguide, and distract the public.”

Obi stressed that if such meetings had taken place, he would have made them public through his verified platforms. “My politics has never been about seeking praise or cheap publicity; it is about confronting the real problems of Nigeria,” he affirmed.

He reiterated his commitment to addressing the nation’s pressing challenges, including insecurity, strengthening rule of law, reforming education and healthcare, and lifting millions out of poverty.

What you should know

Peter Obi has strongly rejected claims of recent meetings with Donald Trump and MC Oluomo, labeling circulating images as doctored.

The former presidential candidate emphasized that his focus remains on Nigeria’s structural challenges, not propaganda or fabricated publicity stunts.
