The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially reinstated Senator Samuel Anyanwu as its National Secretary, following consultations with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Announcing the development during a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, PDP Acting National Chairman Umar Damagun said the decision was made in light of recent discussions with the electoral commission.

“Anyanwu is resuming as the national secretary,” Damagun stated, adding that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting initially scheduled for June 30 has now been converted into an expanded caucus session.

“At the next caucus, we will make a decision leading to a proper NEC. Like INEC said, they don’t have our notice, so we will have an extended caucus meeting on June 30,” Damagun explained.

The briefing was attended by high-profile party leaders, including the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, as well as former Senate President Bukola Saraki.

The decision follows a meeting with INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, who explained the commission’s refusal to attend the party’s proposed 100th NEC meeting. According to INEC, internal disputes over the national secretary position had led to inconsistencies in official communications, particularly in the signing of invitations—contravening the commission’s guidelines for political party operations.

By reinstating Anyanwu, the PDP hopes to restore order and compliance with INEC protocols ahead of future party meetings and electoral processes.

What you should know
The PDP has brought back Senator Samuel Anyanwu as its National Secretary and postponed its NEC meeting to an expanded caucus format, after INEC declined to recognise internal party communications due to leadership disputes.
