The ongoing turmoil within the Peoples Democratic Party took another dramatic turn on Sunday after the faction aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, convened a high-level meeting in Abuja.

The gathering, held at the official residence of the FCT Minister, brought together key figures including Wike, former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, ex-Deputy Speaker Uche Nwuche, the PDP Acting National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, and members of the Board of Trustees (BoT) drawn from states across the federation and the FCT.

During his opening remarks, BoT Chairman Senator Mao Ohuabunwa urged members to set sentiments aside and approach the party’s internal challenges with collective resolve. He revealed that the BoT had made notable progress in forming caretaker committees that would provide the structure needed for congresses in states where they have yet to be conducted.

Ohuabunwa, who previously represented Abia North in the Eighth Senate, stated that disciplinary measures had been taken against individuals whose behaviour threatened the organisation’s stability. According to him, these decisions were essential to safeguard the party from internal sabotage and rebuild trust among loyal members nationwide.

He explained that “recent actions taken in the party reflect the unyielding resolve to uphold the rule of law and defend the constitution of the party,” stressing the BoT’s responsibility to strengthen reforms, reinforce internal unity, and ensure that the PDP emerges more resilient.

“Our duty is clear—to consolidate reforms underway, deepen internal cohesion, and ensure PDP emerges stronger, united. BoT is the moral compass and consciousness of the party,” he said, adding that members must guarantee that the PDP consistently acts in compliance with Nigeria’s laws, the party’s constitution, and regulations set by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

At the centre of the conflict are two opposing factions contesting the party’s national leadership. The Wike-backed bloc is led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, while another faction headed by Kabiru Turaki is supported by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed.

Despite escalating tensions, no court has delivered a definitive ruling on which faction holds legitimate authority over the party’s national structure.

What You Should Know

The PDP’s internal conflict continues to widen, with the faction aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike strengthening its organisational footing through a strategic BoT meeting in Abuja.

Senator Mao Ohuabunwa emphasised unity, discipline, and adherence to party laws while outlining ongoing efforts to establish caretaker committees across affected states. The power struggle now centres on two rival leadership blocs—one led by Abdulrahman Mohammed with Wike’s backing, and another championed by Kabiru Turaki and supported by governors Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed.

With no court ruling yet validating either side, the leadership dispute remains unresolved.
