Comfort Emmanson, a passenger alleged to have assaulted airline staff during an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos, has been formally charged in court and ordered to be held at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos.

The confirmation came from Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, who disclosed the development in a post on his official X account on Monday.

According to Moshood, “The more reason the flying public should be more careful, the unruly passenger on the Uyo–Lagos bound Ibom Air, Miss Comfort Emmanson, has been charged to court and she’s now cooling off in Kirikiri.”

The incident has drawn renewed attention to the growing problem of disruptive behaviour in Nigerian aviation. The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has recently reiterated that it will intensify enforcement measures against passengers whose conduct jeopardises safety or disrupts flight operations. Reports indicate that such incidents have been on the rise at airports across the country.

Further information on the case is expected as proceedings continue.

What you should know

Comfort Emmanson is facing legal action following allegations that she assaulted Ibom Air officials during a flight from Uyo to Lagos. She has been remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending further court proceedings.

Aviation authorities have warned that tougher penalties will be imposed on disruptive passengers in response to a growing trend of such incidents in Nigerian air travel.
