Nigerian football icon Jay-Jay Okocha has offered heartfelt advice to Victor Osimhen as the forward faces a major career decision following a record-setting season with Galatasaray.
Speaking to Turkish broadcaster TRT Spor via Haberler, Okocha, who played for Fenerbahçe from 1996 to 1998, encouraged Osimhen to reflect on the emotional and professional satisfaction he has experienced in Turkey. He suggested that remaining at Galatasaray could be a wise move, even if it comes with personal sacrifices.
“Turkey is a great place to play and live football,” Okocha said. “Sometimes, you may need to make sacrifices when making decisions in football. Osimhen had a great season at Galatasaray. Ultimately, he is happy there. Why shouldn’t he stay with the team? I love Turkey. He loves it too.”
Osimhen, who scored his 37th goal of the season in Galatasaray’s 2–0 victory over İstanbul Başakşehir on Saturday, concluded a stunning loan spell from Napoli. His goals were crucial in helping Galatasaray secure a domestic double—winning both the league and cup titles.
Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk praised the striker’s remarkable contributions but admitted that Osimhen’s future remains uncertain. However, the club is making a clear push to retain him, with reports indicating they’ve offered a new contract worth €15 million per year—an increase of €3 million from his current deal. If accepted, it would make Osimhen the highest-paid player in the club’s history.
Supporters have also taken action, launching a global #staywithus campaign, including a billboard message in New York’s Times Square, to urge the Nigerian star to remain in Istanbul.
When asked whether he had any insider information about Osimhen’s decision, Okocha remained non-committal. “I don’t know,” he said. “Wherever he decides to go, I wish him the best.”
Okocha also fondly reminisced about his time in Turkey, calling it “a wonderful two years” and expressing appreciation for the fans and local cuisine. He ended his remarks with a nod to his former club: “The greatest is Fener.”
