The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has announced that the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) will undergo a scheduled maintenance shutdown beginning May 24, 2025.
This was disclosed in a statement released on Saturday by NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Femi Soneye, who explained that the shutdown is part of a planned maintenance and sustainability assessment to ensure the refinery’s optimal performance.
“The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) wishes to inform the general public that the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) will undergo a planned maintenance shutdown,” the statement read.
Soneye further noted that NNPC is working in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, including the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), to ensure the maintenance is conducted efficiently and transparently.
“NNPC Ltd remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering sustainable energy security,” the statement added.
The company also assured that regular updates would be provided through its official website, media platforms, and public statements.
This marks the second shutdown of the Port Harcourt refinery since it resumed operations in late 2024, following a $1.5 billion rehabilitation project.

The refinery’s scheduled shutdown comes just months after it resumed operations. NNPC says the move is aimed at long-term sustainability and optimal performance, not due to any operational crisis.
