Flight Lieutenant Kafayat Sanni, Nigeria’s trailblazing first female fighter pilot, has added yet another extraordinary milestone to her distinguished career by clinching top awards at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC) in Accra.
At the institution’s graduation ceremony held on Friday, Sanni was celebrated as the Best Allied Student and also won the Best Assistant Commandant Paper—an accolade that recognizes exceptional academic and strategic writing excellence among officers from allied nations.
The high-profile ceremony attracted senior military leaders and dignitaries from across the African continent, reinforcing the importance of GAFCSC as a regional centre of strategic military education. Amid the sea of accomplished officers, Flt Lt Sanni stood out not only for her brilliance in the classroom but also for the symbolic weight of her achievements in a male-dominated field.

Sanni first gained national attention in 2019 when she became the first woman in the history of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to be decorated as a fighter pilot. Having completed her training in the United States, she returned to Nigeria to fly combat missions with the Alpha Jet, and later became a flight instructor on the Super Mushshak, mentoring the next generation of pilots. Her rise in the ranks has made her a powerful role model in both military and civilian circles.
Her success at the Ghanaian military college is not only a personal triumph but also an affirmation of Nigeria’s increasing influence in regional defence discourse. Through officers like Sanni, Nigeria continues to make a bold statement about its strategic intent and the calibre of professionals it deploys to foster international cooperation and military diplomacy.

More than a personal accolade, her recognition in Ghana underscores the Nigerian Air Force’s focused drive to develop human capital. Under the leadership of the current Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, the NAF has intensified investments in talent cultivation, technical training, and gender inclusion—areas where Sanni’s achievements offer visible and inspiring proof of progress.
The decorated officer’s latest feat is not just a win for the military establishment; it resonates deeply within a broader national conversation about women breaking barriers and excelling in traditionally male domains. Her dual awards at GAFCSC shine a light on the value of perseverance, intellect, and courage—all traits that continue to define her journey.
